The Beach Boys’ (don’t get me wrong; I dote on BB music) lead singer Mike Love once said that his group was the Archetypal All-American rock band. Em, you stand corrected, Mike. Not every garage band had the money, the roots in California, and a record contract that Murray Wilson finagled.

 

This is the multimedia story of Strombecker Lighthouse, an all-American, middle-class rock group if ever there was one. We grew up on Beach Boys music, the tunes of Mssrs. Lennon and MacCartney; we flourished in Upstate New York in the 1970s, so naturally, we covered the songs we knew best from the 1960s and 70s. We cut one record that was a hit in Central New York, we recorded in studios, we played out on a boat once, and had a reunion in 1992 only to cut a song digitally. My mom made us costumes so we’d look more professional, and we plunked down a good $20,000 for amps and guitars.
